SANDAKAN: A single mother was brutally stabbed and slashed during a robbery attempt by her own neighbour.

The incident occurred yesterday morning when the 53-year-old victim, who had been asleep, was awakened by a noise at her home in Kampung Sungai Kayu here.

The sounds were being made by her Filipino neighbour, who had broken into her house. He then stormed into the woman’s room and proceeded to stab her multiple times.

“The victim sustained at least 11 stab and slash wounds on the neck, chest, stomach, leg and hand. Based on investigation, the attacker is the woman’s neighbour,” said Sandakan police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Hamin.

He said following the attack, two of the victim’s gold necklaces were missing.

The victim was still conscious, however, when the robber left, and managed to contact her brother at 6.10am to inform him that she was injured.

“(The brother) rushed to his sister’s house, about 20 metres away, and found the victim lying in a pool of blood. He then rushed her to a hospital and lodged a police report,” Azhar said.

He added that the suspect, who is on the run, had been living in the village since 2008, and did odd jobs, such as grass cutting and carpentry.

“We have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

“It is learnt that the victim is a divorcee, with two children, but who lives alone” said Azhar, adding that she is in a stable condition.
