KUCHING, Feb 24 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Sarawak chapter has shortlisted its list of potential candidates for the coming 14th general election, its chief Baru Bian said today.
He said he expects the party’s national political bureau will meet “very soon” to endorse the candidates from Sarawak.
“There should not be any problem for the political bureau to endorse the candidates as it is done based on our recommendations,” he told reporters at the state PKR Chinese New Year’s open house here.
He added the candidates will consist of professionals and those with wide knowledge of issues on the ground.
Baru, who is also the state assemblyman for Ba’Kelalan, declined to confirm speculations that he has been chosen to contest in Limbang, adding that a few potential candidates are being considered.
He also dismissed speculations that PKR’s incumbent federal lawmaker Dr Michael Teo would not be defending his Miri seat in GE14.
He said Dr Teo’s name is on the list of potential candidates to contest in Miri.
The State PKR is eyeing Santubong, Petra Jaya, Punchak Borneo, Batang Lupar, Lubok Antu, Sri Aman, Betong, Saratok, Julau, Selangau, Hulu Rajang, Miri, Baram, Limbang and Kanowit.
These are the seats it contested for in the 2013 general election.
Baru said that the name list of the potential candidates will not be submitted to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for vetting as it does not serve any purpose and it is not a legal requirement for anyone to contest in an election.
“Those potential candidates have not committed any corruption so why ask MACC to check their backgrounds?” he asked.
Of the state PKR’s partners in Pakatan Harapan (PH), the DAP will contest in 11 seats and Parti Amanah Negara will go for five seats.
