1. Kwarteng gambles on biggest tax cuts in half a century

Kwasi Kwarteng has unleashed the biggest tax cuts for half a century in a gamble on economic growth that caused turmoil on financial markets.

On his 18th day in the job, the Chancellor abolished the top rate of income tax and brought forward a reduction in the basic rate that will benefit 31 million workers. Read the full story.

3. Royal Navy explodes warship as it fires new missiles for first time in massive joint exercise with US

Royal Navy helicopters have fired new missiles for the first time as UK and US forces target a warship in the biggest such exercise for two decades.

HMS Westminster, a Wildcat helicopter and three RAF Typhoon jets put on a formidable display of firepower alongside US allies, exploding a specially prepared ex-US Navy warship in the North Atlantic. Read the full story.

4. Putin 'will trigger world nuclear arms race if he bombs Ukraine'

The world will be tipped into a new nuclear arms race if Vladimir Putin is allowed to drop the bomb on Ukraine, a top aide to Volodymyr Zelensky has warned.

Mikhailo Podolyak told The Telegraph it was up to nuclear-armed states like Britain to prevent Russia following through on a threat to strike Ukraine if it attacks newly annexed territory. Read the full story.

5. Heterosexual comedian chooses same-sex partner for Strictly as ‘boys ain’t strong enough’

A comedian who is heterosexual has chosen a same-sex partner for her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing because the male partners “ain’t strong enough”, in a first for the programme.
