What are your first memories of the Mid-Autumn Festival? Did you try to spot a rabbit on the full moon? Were you trying hard to keep your flickering candle lit as you gingerly walk with paper lanterns? Were you gifted plastic lanterns with cheesy music on repeat? Have you tried unsuccessfully to unravel puzzling lantern quizzes? Did you relish the super sweet mooncakes? Is the imagery of Chang’e floating into the sky etched on your mind?

Commonly referred to as Mooncake Festival, which falls on the fifteenth of the eighth lunar month, it is said that the moon is the roundest and brightest on this day. The full moon and round mooncakes are symbolisms of reunions. Sipping tea, eating mooncakes, and bringing the children out for walks with lanterns under the full moon shall always remain fond memories for anyone growing up in the 80s and 90s.

No matter your recollections of this day, this year’s Mid-Autumn will be different from previous years. For one, moon appreciation parties are limited to 5 guests. Which means, if you are used to spending the evening with your extended family, you may need to make use of technology to hold virtual gatherings instead. Not to mention the other bummer of how we will most likely be attending related events and live performances virtually instead.

However, one thing that is sure to stay during this pandemic is our practice of buying delectable mooncakes for the elderly as a mark of care and respect. Happening on 1 October, how would you be spending the evening?

Do not shortchange our Gen Zs of such beautiful memories. Why not recreate these warm moments with them? If there’s anything we have learnt from the on-going pandemic: Do not wait to show your loved ones you care, for we never know what tomorrow brings. So, set a date for a mini get-together with the young and the old in your family, and make memories with your closest and dearest.

Here are some mooncake deals and tea pairing suggestions to make your reunions sweeter!

Mooncake pairings

Mooncakes are never complete without beverages. How would you know you are picking the right teas to go with the wide range of mooncakes available? Be sure to pick teas that complement, rather than overwhelm your tastebuds. Too mind-boggling? A rule of thumb when picking out your teas: Black teas like oolong and pu’er are strong and will pair well with buttery pastries, heavy fillings and intense flavours. Green, white and flower teas possess lighter flavours, so simply pick out similar taste profiles to fully enjoy your bonding sessions.

Here are some tea suggestions – from kombucha, green tea, floral tea to Chinese tea – we think may go well with your mooncakes.
