72-year-old driver dies in hospital after van crashes into footpath near Redhill MRT

The Singapore police said the van was believed to have 'self-skidded'.

SINGAPORE - A 72-year-old man who was trapped in the driver's seat of a van that crashed into a footpath near Redhill MRT station on Monday (27 March) has died.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the traffic accident near 920 Tiong Bahru Road at about 3.20pm.

Upon arrival, the SCDF rescued the man using hydraulic rescue equipment.

In a separate statement, the Singapore police told Yahoo Southeast Asia that the van was believed to have "self-skidded".

The male driver was unconscious when he was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital, where he subsequently died, the police said.

Investigations are ongoing.

In two videos sent by a Yahoo Southeast Asia reader, smoke can be seen emitting from the van, with passers-by crowding the area.

The second video shows SCDF paramedics lifting the man from the ground onto a stretcher before wheeling the him away from the accident site.
