Schweinsteiger out of Barcelona clash - van Gaal

Bastian Schweinsteiger of Manchester United warms up before his team competes against the San Jose Earthquakes during their International Champions Cup football match at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California on July 21, 2015

Bastian Schweinsteiger was ruled out of Manchester United's friendly with Barcelona here Friday after picking up a minor injury. United boss Louis van Gaal said the 30-year-old German World Cup-winner would be rested from Saturday's game against Barcelona as a precautionary measure. Van Gaal said the former Bayern Munich ace had picked up a "little injury" but did not provide further details. "I never talk about the injuries, I say only that it's a minor issue and I don't take risks in preparation time," van Gaal said. "That's why he shall not play, even only for 30 minutes he shall not play," he said, reiterating that Schweinsteiger's knock was "not serious." Schweinsteiger joined United earlier this month in a surprise $23 million three-year deal. United captain Wayne Rooney meanwhile revealed the German star had already proved a positive influence in the dressing room. "Since he's joined up with the squad he's been a fantastic person, speaking with all the players, especially the younger players," Rooney said Friday. "That's a great help to them -- having someone of that experience. He's a great addition to the team. I feel it will be a very good signing for us come the end of the season."
