Andy Robertson scored deep into injury time to guide Scotland to a win over Poland and avoid immediate relegation in the Nations League.

A rare goal from the captain, his first in six years, was a bullet header past Lukasz Skorupski to cancel out Kamil Piątkowski’s equaliser. John McGinn had opened the scoring in the third minute.

Scotland went into the game with faint hopes of finishing in the top two, and qualifying for the knockout stages, but had to rely on a favour from Portugal against Croatia, which did not materialise as the two nations drew 1-1.

The result saw the Scots enter a relegation playoff while the Poles are relegated to the second-tier League B. Scotland finished third on seven points, three above last-placed Poland.

Portugal, who clinched top spot and a place in the quarter-finals last week, have 14 points while Croatia, who are second with eight points, sealed a last-eight berth with a 1-1 home draw against the Portuguese in their final game also on Monday.
