SEA Games 2019 Esports Day 4: Philippines take first esports gold for Mobile Legends

The first gold medal match in the esports component of the SEA Games 2019 happened on Sunday (8 December), Day 4 at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan, Manila.

Yahoo Southeast Asia looks at the results from Day 4, where the host country the Philippines claimed bragging rights to the first ever esports gold in the SEA Games.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

The Philippines’ Sibol faced Malaysia’s Team Bosskur in the lower bracket finals, with the hosts winning the series 2-0 to face Team Indonesia in the grand finals.

Team Indonesia and Sibol consistently cancelled each other out, leading to a fifth game to determine the gold medallists.

Sibol, with the home crowd loudly behind them, prevailed in the fith game to win the series 3-2, and made history by becoming the first team to achieve an esports gold medal at the SEA Games.

Indonesia got themselves the silver medal while Malaysia would take home the bronze.

Arena of Valor

Indonesia’s EVOS Esports faced off Thailand’s Workpoint Fighting Fish in the upper bracket finals, and won the game 2-1 to advance into the finals, thus securing themselves either the gold or silver medal.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Mocha ZD Esports played against Malaysia’s Ikan Mashin, winning the series 2-1.

Vietnam will face Workpoint Fighting Fish in the upcoming lower bracket finals on 9 December to determine who advances into the grand finals and who gets the bronze.

Dota 2

Vietnam’s 496 Gaming played the first match of the day against The Philippines’ Team Adroit in the upper bracket finals. They lost the series 0-2, with Team Adroit securing themselves a slot in the grand finals.

Meanwhile, in the lower bracket, Team Thailand was victorious against Team Laos, winning 2-0 before facing 496 Gaming, who had dropped to the lower bracket.

Team Thailand, however, managed to keep up the momentum, and won a hard-fought 2-1 series against the Vietnamese to make the grand finals. Vietnam’s 496 Gaming bowed out of the tournament with the bronze medal.

The grand finals for Dota 2 will take place on 9 December.
