SINGAPORE — Singapore is set to host the 35th SEA Games in 2029, after the SEA Games Federation accepted its interest to host the biennial event at its meeting in Hanoi on Thursday (12 May).

The city-state last hosted the Games in 2015 amid celebrations of its 50th year of independence, and clinched a record 84 golds, 73 silvers and 102 bronzes in that edition. It was placed second in the medal tally after Thailand, the highest ranking it has achieved since the 1975 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games.

Singapore had also previously held the sporting extravaganza in 1973, 1983 and 1993.

"We are pleased to host the prestigious regional sporting event in Singapore again," said Singapore National Olympic Council president Tan Chuan-Jin.

"The SEA Games holds special memories and experiences for Singapore and our Southeast Asian neighbours. The camaraderie and rivalry we share are distinct and Singapore is once again happy to organise the 35th SEA Games to relive these moments."

Minister of Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong believes that hosting the SEA Games will give the Team Singapore athletes another opportunity to compete with strong home support.

"The spirit of the SEA Games can also bring Singaporeans from all walks of life together, to cheer and rally behind our athletes, and strengthen our national unity," he added.

"Following the successful hosting of the 2015 SEA Games, we are confident that the 35th SEA Games in 2029 can be another defining moment for Singaporeans and also an opportunity to showcase our hospitality, and tighten bonds with our Southeast Asian neighbours."

Following the ongoing SEA Games in Hanoi, the next edition in 2023 will be held in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. Following that, the Games is set to be hosted by Bangkok in 2025 and Kuala Lumpur in 2027.
