Singapore’s Soh Rui Yong made good on his promise to defend the SEA Games marathon title he won in 2015, and clinched the gold medal on Saturday morning (19 Aug) at Putrajaya.

Soh completed the marathon in a time of 2 hours 29min 27sec, outpacing Indonesia’s Agus Prayogo who took the silver in 2:31.20, and Malaysia’s Muhuaizar Mohamed who won the bronze in 2:31.52.

Agus is a three time SEA Games gold medallist in the 10,000m, and was bidding for his first marathon gold.

A long-time admirer of Agus, Soh was emotional after beating the Indonesian, whom he befriended in 2012. “I’m happy that I raced my idol and I got beat him. But he’ll always be a hero to me,” said Soh to the media as he choked back tears.
