SEGAMAT: A total of 56 people from four villages in three sub-districts here were evacuated when their homes were inundated by flood waters last night.
The victims were relocated to four flood relief centres in the Segamat district starting from about 10pm yesterday.
Flood waters rose after a heavy downpour led the Buloh Kasap river to burst its banks, causing water to overflow into low-lying areas.
State health and environment committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said two relief centres were opened in Kemelah, one in Pemanis and one in Jementah.
"The downpour last night caused the water level at the Buloh Kasap river to rise, and subsequently, overspill into the low-lying villages nearby," he said.
Ayub added that several agencies, including the Segamat branch of the Civil Defence Force, the Segamat District Office and the Segamat Welfare Department were involved in the re-location of the flood victims.
