GE2015: FULL COVERAGE

Senate winners may be proclaimed Wednesday, says Comelec #purplethumb

The winners of the senatorial race may be proclaimed by Wednesday night, only 48 hours after elections close Monday, the poll chief said.

Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. is confident of swift election results despite reports of malfunctioning machines and human error which caused delays in several areas.

"Winners for municipal positions will be proclaimed probably within 12 to 24 hours," Brillantes said in an interview on election day at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Announcement of results, he noted, "may take a little bit longer"--probably 36 hours--for provincial and congressional elective positions.

"[For] national [positions], our target is 48 hours, Wednesday night," Brillantes said.

"Sana makapag-proclaim na tayo ng 12 (I hope we can proclaim 12 by then)," he added.

The poll chief was referring to the 12 seats contested in the cutthroat Senate race for the midterm elections.

Aside from the senatorial positions, national positions at stake include seats for 58 party-list representatives in the House of Representatives.

The National Board of Canvassers for the senatorial and party-list race will convene at 6 p.m., an hour before poll precincts close.

"We will lay down the procedure of our canvassing," Brillantes said.

The poll chief also noted that he expects a 70-percent voter turnout in the country's second automated elections.
