Senators breeze past Canadiens in outdoor game

Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Ottawa Senators blanked the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 in the first outdoor game of the 2017-18 NHL regular season. Players from both the Senators and Canadiens braved frigid temperatures of -13 Celsius (8F) in the third period as did the 33,900 fans at Ottawa's Lansdowne Park stadium. "The atmosphere was crazy from the warmup to the last second of the third," said Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau. "We played a really solid game and when the atmosphere is that high, the energy is up." The win was the second in a row for the Senators, who are trying to dig out of a hole they made during a 1-5-1 road trip. The game was one of three outdoor contests the NHL has planned for the 2017-18 season. The Buffalo Sabres travel to New York on New Year's Day to play the Rangers at Citi Field, home of the baseball Mets. On March 3, the Toronto Maple Leafs square off against the Alex Ovechkin-led Washington Capitals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Maryland. Pageau, Bobby Ryan and Nate Thompson scored for the Senators. Carey Price stopped 35 shots in goal for the Canadiens. Pageau broke a scoreless tie at 14:55 of the second period. Pageau moved over to the slot while Tom Pyatt retrieved the puck in the corner. Pyatt put the puck back to Erik Karlsson, who took a shot that Pageau deflected over Price's left shoulder. It was his fourth goal of the season.
