Atty. Carlo Cruz
MANILA, Philippines — Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is determined to face her impeachment complaint before Congress.
Last Friday, she designated Atty. Carlo Cruz as impeachment spokesman. He teaches Constitutional Law at U.P., U.S.T. and other universities; a bar reviewer and son of late Supreme Court Justice Isagani Cruz.
Sereno’s legal team will be led by Atty Alex Poblador, who defended Sen. Grace Poe in the disqualification case last Presidential Elections.
“We will take the fight, yes. We will have a good fight, yes. We will be able to prove that the allegations against her are baseless, yes. I’m sure that we will be allowed to present our evidence,” Atty. Cruz said.
Cruz said the Chief Justice is ready to refute the allegations in the impeachment complaint.
Most, if not all of them, are baseless or were anchored on hearsay evidence.
“Not because there are rumors mean it’s already a ground to remove on the basis of impeachment. We have to be very careful here. Claiming is easy. Proving it is hard. Assuming it was proven, there is still an obstacle – is it impeachable?” Cruz added.
He said that while impeachment is political in nature, the Constitution must prevail.
If Sereno, has indeed, committed an offense, it should be threshed out in the right process and not through defamation in the social media or the attacks of the President.
“She is taking this seriously but she is confident that the Congress will act properly, or at the very least, the Congress, both houses, would decide purely on the basis of what is indicated in the constitution,” Cruz said.
Cruz added Sereno has nothing to hide and all issues will be refuted in their reply to the Congress. – Roderic Mendoza | UNTV News & Rescue
