Mr Biehlmaier said the initial information suggested the suspect, a German citizen, and one or more of the victims knew each other.

He said some of the victims were from the same family.

Rot am See is about 170km (105 miles) north west of Munich.

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Germany.

The country was left in shock last year after a heavily armed assailant tried to force his way into a synagogue in Halle then shot two people to death nearby in an attack that was livestreamed on a popular gaming site.
