Education Minister Heng Swee Keat slammed the behaviour of National University of Singapore (NUS) ASEAN law scholar and sex blogger, Alvin Tan, saying his recent acts were “reprehensible and unbecoming of a scholar”.

Minister Heng made the comments in Parliament on Monday, reported The Straits Times.

Alvin Tan, 24, a law student at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and his Malaysian girlfriend Vivian Lee, 23, made news on both sides of the Causeway last month for posting sexually explicit photos of themselves on their blog.

He has since apologized to the NUS board, who disciplined him last week but refused to release details of his punishment, calling it a “private matter”.

Members of Parliament Lim Biow Chuan, Intan Azura Mokhtar, Yee Jenn Jong and Pritam Singh on Monday called for the NUS to make public their actions. The MPs also questioned how ASEAN scholarships are awarded.

Workers Party MP Singh gave the example of Chinese scholar Sun Xu who also faced disciplinary actions but had his punishments known to the public.

Heng cleared the air by adding that Sun Xu and Tan’s cases were under completely different matters and circumstances.
