Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder says talks have already begun with Manchester United over the possibility of goalkeeper Dean Henderson returning to Bramall Lane on loan for a third successive season.

However, Wilder ruled out the possibility of the 22-year-old joining on a permanent basis, suggesting the Blades could not afford his transfer fee.

Henderson helped Sheffield United win promotion from the Championship whilst on loan last season, and has impressed in the top flight during this campaign, having been sent out again.

Only runaway leaders Liverpool have conceded fewer league goals than Wilder’s men, and Henderson’s performances earned him his first England call-up in October, though he is yet to make his international debut.

“If the opportunity comes about that we could get him back on loan next season, we’d be all over that,” Wilder confirmed.

“It’s a decision for Manchester United for him to come out to us for another year. We’d gladly take that. We’ve already started talking with them but he’s their player and that decision will be made on behalf of Manchester United and their player, but he’s been outstanding for us.”

Henderson joined Man United’s academy at the age of 14 and is rated highly at Old Trafford, but finds his path to the first team blocked by David De Gea, while back-up Sergio Romero is considered among the best in the division.

However, Wilder refused to entertain the possibility of buying the Englishman outright.

“His future is at Manchester United, no doubt,” Wilder said. “If the opportunity came about that figure would be huge.

“He wants to play first-team football. Maybe I shouldn’t be saying this but I’m not so sure he’ll play backup to anybody because it’s just the character of the boy.”
