Shila Amzah to testify on defamation suit next Monday

The Chinese-singing Malay singer will testify on her defamation suit against an entertainment reporter next Monday

Local singing sensation Shila Amzah is set to testify in the hearing of her defamation suit next Monday, 7 December 2015, against an entertainment reporter alongside two others in relation to an alleged defamatory article published in Kosmo! on 17 September 2014, Bernama reports.

As the plaintiffs, the 25-year-old singer and her recording company, Shila Amzah Entertainment Berhad filed the suit on 16 January 2015, and named the tabloid's entertainment reporter, Maliah Surip, its editor and publisher Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad as the defendants.

Shila has claimed that Maliah had written several articles which accused the singer of having the largest casino in the country as sponsor for her "Shila Amzah-Love Live in Malaysia" concert at Mega Star Arena on 13 September 2014 and also to address claims that Shila had not invited the Malay media for her concert coverage.

She also said that the articles were written after an account holder who goes by the name "Shilaamzah_photography", uploaded a status on Instagram, generally praising the Chinese media for their comprehensive coverage on the concert.

However, Shila claimed that she did not know the Instagram account holder, and the account is not related to her company in anyway. She also mentioned that the "gambling company" never sponsored her concert.

Thus, Shila and her recording company are seeking a ruling so that the three defendants would not repeat or republish similar articles. Shila also seeks an order for the articles to be withdrawn.
