Shirley Yuen admits to compulsive buying disorder

30 Jun - Hong Kong singer Shirley Yuen recently attended the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Singers Association, and expressed hope that it will help artistes maintain social welfare, as well as help singers in facing psychological issues.

According to Mingpao News, Shirley, who is now focusing her time in working for the association, stated that artistes often keep their emotions hidden for fear of being criticised.

"Due to their work as an artiste, a singer who experiences psychological problem would keep it to his or herself. Often it reaches a critical point," said Shirley.

Shirley, who had studied psychology for many years, revealed that she herself used to suffer from a psychological issue that led to suicidal thoughts.

"I grew up in a broken family, and didn't have a happy youth," she admitted.

Instead of committing suicide, Shirley said that she developed a compulsive buying disorder that resulted in her being hundreds of thousands in debt.

However, the singer stated that she was blessed to be able to heal from her psychological issue, and hopes that her work with the association will help other singers with similar issues as well.
