Shock Tottenham transfer news emerges as club decides against completing expected £30m signing
Reports have emerged that Tottenham have decided against completing an expected transfer this summer that will leave many of the club’s fans scratching their heads.
It’s expected to be a busy summer of ins and outs at Spurs, while there is also the small matter of appointing a new manager as well as a sporting director after Fabio Paratici’s exit.
But one signing that was expected to be a formality was that of Dejan Kulusevski turning his loan switch into a permanent one.
Tottenham signed the Sweden international in January 2022 on an 18-month loan with a £30.4million option to make the deal permanent.
However, a report from Corriere dello Sport claims that the club have informed Juventus that they will not be activating the option to sign Kulusevski due to the fact that they will not be playing in the Champions League next season.
Saturday’s loss at Aston Villa, and subsequent failure to secure a top-four spot, is expected to play a significant role in what Spurs spend this summer.
And it appears, according to Corriere anyway, that Kulusevski’s transfer has been factored into that thinking.
The 23-year-old is now expected to return to Allianz Stadium at the end of the current season in a move that is likely to leave many Tottenham fans frustrated.
Kulusevski second-season struggles
The Swede was outstanding in the second half of last season but the current campaign has proved more of a struggle.
Injury issues have played a part but he does not look the same player that was providing goals and assists in bucket loads as Spurs eventually finished in the top four last term.
Indeed, this term, Kulusevski has scored just twice and has seven assists in 35 games in all competitions.
It must be added, however, that there are also reports around suggesting that Tottenham still want to activate Kulusevski’s clause – although the speculation coming out of Italy appears to have more weight to it.
Spurs are back in action on Saturday when they host Brentford in the Premier League hoping to keep their hopes of finishing sixth in the league and qualifying for the Europa League alive.
