Shot put queen Adams wins again on road to Rio Olympics

New Zealand's Valerie Adams competes in the Shot Put Women's event at the Rome's Diamond League competition on June 2, 2016 at the Olympic Stadium in Rome

New Zealand's shot put queen Valerie Adams continued to put last year's injury woes behind her with a dominant victory in Thursday's Diamond League meet in Rome. Following up on her win in Rabat last week, Adams threw a season's best of 19.69 metres on her third attempt in a consistent display at the Stadio Olimpico. Her winning distance was 71cm ahead of Anita Marton of Hungary. "I guess this year I am more motivated than ever," said Adams, the four-time world outdoor champion, three-time world indoor champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist. "2016 is an Olympic year. It is a great challenge, a great year. Last year was really tough for me," the 31-year-old said in reference to knee surgery that put paid to her injury-bedevilled 2015 season. She added: "I was really good today. I am a lot more consistent than I have been in the past. "The competition was good. I will take the win but I do not think in terms of being the Diamond Race leader, what I need is to get competitions under my belt. "Training, keep building from there and come out and have fun. This is my fourth Olympics!"
