Sibu Corporal among 7 nabbed for graft surrounding illegal immigrant influx

SIBU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a six-day remand order against a Corporal for allegedly accepting bribes.

The MACC was granted the order when the 44-year-old policeman, attached with the Sibu Jaya police station here, was brought to the magistrate's court here today.

The Corporal, clad in a black t-shirt and a pair of jeans, was immediately escorted by MACC men from the court compound after the remand order was granted.

The Corporal was among seven people arrested by the graft busters yesterday during "Ops Batas" for suspected involvement in corruption, linked to the influx of illegal immigrants to Sarawak.

The Corporal was among two policemen nabbed during the operation. The other officer is an assistant superintendent.

The MACC did not apply for a remand order against the assistant superintendent, as he is “ill and weak.”

"He, however, will still be placed on MACC's radar until the end of the investigation into the case," said sources closed to the investigation team.
