Life by You, a competitor to EA's popular The Sims franchise, has been unveiled with a full trailer that confirms the game will be open-world.

Developed by Paradox Tectonic, the new life simulation game is helmed by Rod Humble, who previously worked on The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, and the trailer lists off several features that players can expect to see in the final release.

In addition to an open world, there's a huge focus on customisation – from the characters to the world itself – plus careers, exploration, and modding.

Players will be able to take direct control of any character in the world at any time and write their own dialogue. The promo also hints at allowing players to create their own items, objects, gameplay, skills, traits, quests, events, and collectibles.

The game will see an early access release on September 12 on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with pre-orders exclusive on the latter platform.

"We anticipate that the game will be in Early Access for at least 12 months," Paradox said on Life by You's Epic Games Store page. "This time is subject to change as we continue to work on development and receive feedback from you, our Early Access players."

The early access build will not include all of the planned features in the final version of the game.

Life by You's announcement comes as The Sims 4 has launched its latest expansion, Growing Together. 2022 was The Sims 4's most successful year to date in terms of hours played across all players, with a total of 1.4 billion hours.

A fifth Sims game is in development right now, with a working title of Project Rene.

Life by You isn't the only upcoming game looking to challenge The Sims in the life simulation genre. Indie game Paralives, which aims to let players to customise their characters and dream homes, initially received a fair bit of online attention in 2020.
