Singapore 4G leaders say new PM will be chosen 'in good time': reports

Singapore’s fourth-generation leaders are “keenly aware” of the urgency of picking the next Prime Minister, and will choose a leader among them “in good time”, according to media reports.

In a joint statement signed by 16 People’s Action Party political officeholders in response to media queries, the younger ministers addressed the issue of political succession.

“Political stability has been the hallmark of Singapore and smooth leadership succession has instilled confidence amongst Singaporeans and our friends around the world,” said the statement released on Thursday (4 January).

It added, “The younger Ministers are keenly aware that leadership succession is a pressing issue and that PM Lee intends to step down after the next General Election. We are conscious of our responsibility, are working closely together as a team, and will settle on a leader from amongst us in good time.”

The signatories to the statement included Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing, Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat and Education Minister (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung.

The trio are considered leading contenders to succeed current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

On Sunday, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who was Lee’s predecessor as PM, said that he hopes the identity of Singapore’s next premier will be decided in the next six to nine months.
