Elvin Ng focused on the joy of acting, says he doesn't 'live to satisfy others'

The actor is set to make his return in an upcoming drama after leaving Singapore last July to take a one-month course at the New York Film Academy.

He might have left Singapore last July hoping to be an “enriched version” of himself, but local actor Elvin Ng is now tempering expectations from viewers.

After all, the New York Film Academy course that he left Singapore to pursue was only a month long.

When asked by Lianhe Zaobao about audiences expecting to see a new version of him, Ng said he’s not feeling too much pressure on that front.

The focus is on the joy of acting, the 42-year-old said, and he’s not giving much thought to other things.

“It’s not up to me to decide what kind of expectations the viewers have. But I don’t live to satisfy other people’s expectations. It’s a good thing for viewers to have expectations, I have expectations of myself,” Ng told the Chinese daily in an article published on Tuesday (6 June).

“However, I only went for a month of classes. Although I have new insights, it doesn’t mean I’ve changed myself completely.”

No new acting projects for more than a year

The question came about not just because of his acting course, but also because the local heartthrob has not been seen in dramas since 2021’s The Heartland Hero.

However, the hiatus wasn’t of his own doing.

Ng revealed to Lianhe Zaobao that he had accepted a project last year but it didn’t come through.

With an extended period of free time on his hands, seemingly for the first time in 18 years since he entered showbiz, he decided to jet off to New York for further studies.

“After I returned from my studies, there wasn’t any casting and the company wanted to use more new talents. It’s not just me - some artistes filmed more while others filmed less,” he observed.

Ng will be next seen in the upcoming drama series My One and Only, along with former Mediacorp actress Ya Hui (who recently shared her own trouble with scams and hackings), slated to air in July this year.
