Apple fans in Singapore finally got their hands on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max on Friday morning (21 September) at the flagship Apple Orchard Road store.

As reported by Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore yesterday, a large crowd of people had already begun queuing outside the store a day prior to the new phones’ release. Some 350 people were seen lining up.

Vietnamese Le Thang, who was first in line, said he was happy with his new purchase. “This is a special day for me,” said the 20-year-old, who had come to Singapore especially to queue for the latest iPhone XS Max.

The iPhone XS Max costs up to S$2,349 in Singapore. The iPhone XS starts at S$1,649, while the cheaper iPhone XR – available from next month – starts at S$1,229.

Likewise, Jack Lim, 28, said that he felt “honoured” to be one of the first few customers in Singapore to pick up Apple’s latest iPhone. He pre-ordered the iPhone XS Max a week prior to the launch.

Said the university student, who considers himself an iPhone enthusiast, “I feel very excited because I’ve been using the iPhone since it started.”

On whether the high price of the new iPhone model had deterred him in any way, he said: “To me, for every amount that I have paid, the quality has been there. Apple has been proven to have good quality products.”

“I’ll never let it (his iPhone) go,” he said.

In a clever marketing strategy by Apple’s competitor Huawei, representatives clad in Huawei t-shirts handed out free powerbanks to those in the queue outside Apple’s store ahead of the launch.

Find the Yahoo Story Contest question: iPhone prices have now exceeded S$2,300, and a flagship Samsung phone can cost over S$1,700 – many times what a budget Android smartphone costs. In your opinion, what is the best reason to buy an expensive smartphone – or not? [Contest is closed]
