Living, breathing and working here, how do you feel about the quality of life on our Little Red Dot? We all already know that Singapore is a magnet for rich people to reside in, and this may or may not irk you depending on how you look at things - Singapore has been ranked the best destination for expats to live in according to consulting firm Mercer's 19th Quality of Living recently released survey.
Why? Singapore scored top marks for city infrastructure which takes into account each surveyed city's reliable supply of electricity and drinkable water, public transportation, mail and telephone services, traffic congestion as well as the myriad of international flights available from local airports. There were 230 other cities to beat and Singapore came up tops in this category, ahead of European cities Munich (#2), Frankfurt (#2), Copenhagen (#4) and Dusseldorf (#5). 1. Quality Of Living - #25 In World
Although Singapore has the highest quality of living amongst its Asian counterparts, Singapore is #25 in the world this year, behind cities like Vienna (#1), Zurich (#2), Auckland (#3), Munich (#4), Vancouver (#5) etc. Rounding out the top 5 in Asia are all Japanese cities Tokyo (#47), Kobe (#50), Yokohama (#51), and Osaka (#60). According to Mercer, these rankings were computed after considering over 39 factors that affect quality of living in general.
2. Most Expensive City - #1 In World
Surprise, surprise. Singapore is, once again, the most expensive city on the planet. In accordance to the Economist Intelligence Unit's Worldwide Cost of Living 2017 survey, prices of more than 150 items in 133 cities peppered across the world had been compared.
This may come as a shock but it was found that Singapore's 20% pricier than New York and about 5% more expensive than Hong Kong. By the way, Hong Kong is the world's second most expensive city.
3. World's Happiest Country - #26 In World
Do you genuinely feel happy majority of the time? According to the newest World Happiness Report that was just released, Norway is now the happiest country on Earth, beating out the 154 other countries surveyed and overtaking Denmark.
Anyhow, Singapore is now ranked #26, down from last year's rank of #22. That means Singapore, or rather, Singaporeans are more unhappy compared with last year. Not sure what the Straits Times news report is trying to do here, but it highlighted that Singapore is still the happiest Asian country. What are your thoughts?
4. Global Startup Talent - #1 In World
Overtaking Silicon Valley is no mean feat but Singapore has surpassed Silicon Valley as a startup ecosystem with regard to startup talents. Startup Genome's Global Startup Ecosystem Report and Ranking 2017 surveyed a whopping 10,000 startup founders in over 100 cities around the world.
Apparently, Singapore's top marks for startup talent stems from its great performance in access to quality talent as well as cost. Great for businesses but perhaps not so awesome for talents, startup talents in Singapore are generally paid lower than their peers abroad. Silicon Valley is still leading the pack across all metrics in the report, though.
