Singapore’s Dining-in Trend

Singaporeans are returning home for dinner, but without the takeaway box – food and chef come to them. Culinary variety and about millions of options are no secret and make our love for food very obvious. While eating out is extremely popular (and will remain so too), many of Singaporean homes have turned to dining-in instead of dining-out.

The trend evolved from the catering business not too long ago. Traditional catering services often only offered food being delivered to one’s doorstep to be then displayed as a buffet style. However, as many Singaporeans wanted to go a step further without wanting to host parties in restaurants. A chef service combining both food delivery and all comforts of a restaurant was born.

Not Only Special Occasions

“It is very common for groups of friends to meet on a regular basis for dinner, but instead of going to a restaurant they are ordering a chef to come to them.”

The trend started with birthday parties and special occasions, which people increasingly want to celebrate at home with family and friends. Be it a buffet, a BBQ party or a three-course meal in someone’s kitchen, chefs were in demand for anniversaries, celebrations or weddings. However, the trend is widening out. More and more chefs are cooking for casual friend gatherings. Chefs Love It

One might expect that the dining-in trend is a hassle for the chef, but they actually love it. Jean-Philippe Patruno, who is a well-established executive chef in a famous restaurant here in Singapore, says that “going to people’s house to cook is a beautiful and intimate experience for them as well as me”. Chefs can actually fulfill their culinary dreams and be creative, while having direct contact with the people that eat their food.

“A chef service is super convenient when I have my friends over – and it doesn’t break the bank”, says Lionel Ng.

Getting a private chef is often still considered as a luxury, but in reality can cost the same as a visit to a restaurant. Inviting a chef to cook for you and your friends is no longer out of this world, but affordable and an experience that gathers more and more momentum in Singapore – for both locals and expats alike. “I heard about it from a friend. After I tried it, I was super amazed by the whole charade. A chef service is super convenient when I have my friends over – and it doesn’t break the bank”, says Lionel Ng. “I am looking forward to the next party already.” On top of the convenience, dining-in also offers the same the vast culinary multitude that all of Singapore relishes when eating out.
