SINGAPORE — The Singapore national netball team got their first win at this year’s Netball Nations Cup, after they beat Ireland 51-35 at OCBC Arena on Tuesday (22 October).

After opening the tournament on Sunday with a draw against Namibia and following up with a loss against Botswana, Singapore started strongly to open up a 13-5 first-quarter lead and held firm against the Irish to register the victory.

Despite the win, coach Natalie Milicich was unsatisfied with Singapore’s performance, even saying that it was more inconsistent than how they performed in the earlier two games.

“We will take the win, and we will be able to have that winning feeling brought into tomorrow’s match (against Cook Islands), which will be a really important one for us,” she said.

“We need to have an honest discussion of our performance and make sure that we don’t make the same mistakes we did for today. We need to make sure that we stick to the game plan as well because we did stray away a bit today.”

In other Nations Cup matches on Tuesday, Botswana beat Papua New Guinea 58-36, and Namibia defeated Cook Islands 61-47.

The Netball Nations Cup features six nations – Singapore, Namibia, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and Botswana – and will be held at the OCBC Arena until Saturday.

Wednesday will see Papua New Guinea taking on Namibia, followed by Botswana vs Ireland, and concluding with Cook Islands vs Singapore. For more information, please visit Netball Singapore’s website and tickets to the tournament are available here.
