Singapore-born giant panda cub Le Le makes public debut
SINGAPORE — Le Le, the Singapore-born giant panda cub, made his public debut at the River Wonder's Giant Panda Forest exhibit on Thursday (30 December) morning.
The cub, which was born on 14 August to giant pandas Jia Jia and Kai Kai, is available for public viewing daily at 10.30am and 3.30pm. Each viewing session will last about 20 to 30 minutes, said Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) in a news release.
Timings of the viewing sessions may also vary "depending on the comfort level of both mother and son, and will be reviewed and adjusted over the next few weeks", the release said.
On Wednesday, MWG unveiled the cub's name, which had garnered 31,000 votes out of 64,000 cast by members of the public.
“The character ‘Le (叻)’ comes from ‘Shi Le Po’ (石叻坡), which was the ancient Chinese name for Singapore. This was in use since the island’s beginning as a trading port. Shi Le Po is a transliteration of the Malay term ‘selat’ which means straits, indicative of Singapore’s geographical location,” said MWG on its website.
Weighing around 200 grams at birth, Le Le has grown up fast and now weighs nearly 10 kilograms. His parents arrived in Singapore in 2012, on a 10-year loan from China.
