SINGAPORE — A newborn baby boy was found alive in a ground floor garbage bin at the bottom of the rubbish chute at a HDB block in Bedok on Tuesday (7 January) morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that it responded to a call for assistance at Block 534 Bedok North Street 3 at about 9.30am. “A baby was conveyed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital,” said an SCDF spokesperson.

Separately, the police said the baby was male, showed no visible injuries and was in stable condition.

The infant had reportedly been found by cleaners who were clearing the bin.

Yahoo News Singapore understands that the baby still had its umbilical cord attached. The child was wrapped in a plastic bag, reported The Straits Times.

Cases of child abandonment in Singapore are rare, with about two to three reported a year on average.
