Singapore police investigating teens for spittle in public lifts
SINGAPORE – The police are investigating two males, aged 12 and 17, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of public nuisance in HDB lifts.
In a press release issued on Friday (28 February), the police said that they received two separate reports on spittle found in lifts.
On 23 February, the spittle was allegedly found on the mirror inside a lift of a block along Punggol Walk, and on 25 February, was found on the buttons of a lift along Ang Mo Kio Street 32.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of the teenagers through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras. Police investigations are ongoing.
The offence of public nuisance under Section 290 of the Penal Code carries a fine of up to $2,000. If the act will cause or will probably cause any common injury, danger or annoyance to the public, or to the people in general who dwell or occupy property in the vicinity, it carries a jail term of up to three months, or a fine of up to $2,000, or both.
The police said it takes a “serious view of such inconsiderate and irresponsible behaviour, especially in the current COVID-19 situation”.
“Everyone needs to play their part by observing good personal hygiene and being socially responsible,” the police added.
Similar incident at Rumbia LRT station
This isn’t the first time teenagers have caused nuisance in public lifts.
On 22 February, the police said it was investigating three male teenagers for spitting on the buttons of a lift panel at Rumbia LRT station.
The LRT’s operator SBS Transit had earlier shared an image of the supposed spittle covering the lift’s buttons on its Facebook page.
“This is an abhorrent act even under normal circumstances. In the present situation, it’s more than mischief,” said the company in the post, adding that it had made a police report.
SBS Transit also noted in the post that the lift had since been cleaned and disinfected.
