Singapore rises in ranking of best student cities

Singaporeans don’t have to look too far when it comes to deciding on the best city to pursue their tertiary studies.

According to the QS Best Student Cities list for 2016, the Lion City ranks as the sixth best city for international students around the globe, taking a leap from the 15h spot it had last year.

Paris and Melbourne have maintained their positions as the leading student cities, coming in first and second, respectively.

Tokyo, Sydney and London round out the top five on the index in order.

Kuala Lumpur made the top spot on the "affordability" category, although on overall rankings it was 53rd on the index.

Singapore is 32nd on the "affordability" scale, falling from the 27th position last year.

As for being the most diverse city with a great student mix, Melbourne is uncontested, with a perfect score for both 2015 and 2016, but Sydney gets the perfect score on the desirability index in 2016.

The index is based on a diverse range of indicators divided into five key categories, namely university rankings, affordability, student mix, desirability, and employer activity.

To be included in the index, a city must have a population of over 250,000 and be home to at least two universities included in the QS rankings.

A total of 116 cities qualified for the rankings this year.
