Singapore state flags at government buildings to fly half-mast on day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral
SINGAPORE — State flags at all government buildings in Singapore will be flown at half-mast on the day of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II as a mark of respect, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on Friday (9 September).
Parliament will observe one minute of silence at the beginning of its sitting on Monday, the PMO added.
“The Prime Minister is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was the Head of the Commonwealth, and the very heart and soul of the United Kingdom.
“On behalf of all Singaporeans, the Prime Minister expresses his deepest condolences and sympathies to His Majesty King Charles III and all members of the Royal family, Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss and the British people, and the peoples of the Commonwealth countries,” the PMO said.
No date of the day of the funeral has been announced yet by Buckingham Palace. According to various media reports, the funeral is expected to be held 10 days or later after the Queen’s “day of death”.
In a post on his Facebook page on Friday, PM Lee Hsien Loong said Queen Elizabeth II was the “very heart and soul of the United Kingdom”. She oversaw one of the longest periods of peace and prosperity in the history of the UK during her reign, he added.
“She performed her duties with devotion, grace, and humility. Her contributions to the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and indeed to the world will be recorded in history, and she will always be remembered fondly as a great world leader.
“Her Majesty also left a significant mark on Singapore’s history and our longstanding close relations with the United Kingdom. Her passing is greatly mourned by everyone in Singapore.”
