Police in Ho Chi Minh City arrested a Singaporean man on Tuesday (2 Feb) for locking his girlfriend in a hotel room after a dispute, the Thanh Nien Daily reported.

The police said Eng Yong Kit, 41, would be charged with illegally detaining his 24-year-old Vietnamese girlfriend against her will.

They received a tip-off that Eng was keeping the woman locked up in the room after hotel staff unsuccessfully tried to resolve the dispute, which allegedly involved money.

Vietnamese news outlet Anninh Thudo said officials from the Consulate-General of Singapore were also there to assist with the situation.

Eng refused to release his girlfriend, resulting in the police breaking into the room, freeing the woman and placing him under arrest.
