Malaysian singer Nabila Razali has apologized for delivering a poor rendition of her own song on national television last night.
The 28-year-old caught viewers off guard when she sang out of tune for many parts of the song Peluang Kedua, or Second Chance, at the Anugerah Juara Lagu music awards show, drawing criticism on the internet but also words of encouragement from supporters.
“I’ve tried my very best… I’m so sorry @haelhusaini @wearemfmf,” she wrote on Instagram and Twitter yesterday, tagging singer-songwriter Hael Husaini and her record label. She even sounded out of breath at certain points of her performance.
Nabila was among the twelve acts that performed at Malaysia’s equivalent of the Grammys, which celebrated 12 of the most popular songs in the local music industry over the past year. Gila, or Crazy, by artistes Kaka Azraff, Noki, and Loca B won last night’s RM50,000 (US$12,000) grand prize.
Nabila’s four-minute-long performance ended with her appearing visibly dejected and at the brink of tears. Among those sending her words of comfort online was singing icon Siti Nurhaliza, who told her on Instagram: “You did your best!”
Meanwhile, a brutally honest comment by music producer Hafiz Hamidun got canceled. His now-deleted tweet called Nabila’s set a “wasted opportunity.”
On YouTube, some felt that Nabila was clearly nervous.
“I can hear her nervousness through her voice,” one person said in the comments, while another wrote: “She needs a new song that suits her vocal range.”
Nabila’s singing career began in 2013 after making it into the top 5 of the Akademi Fantasia singing competition. She has since released the Vroom Vroom pop single and starred in local television dramas. Peluang Kedua came out last year and features rapper MK from local group K-Clique.
