SP Balasubrahmanyam critical, on life support

Popular playback singer, SP Balasubrahmanyam, who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19, has suffered a major setback in his health.

MGM Healthcare, where he is undergoing treatment for over a week, has just issued a statement saying that the singer’s health has deteriorated, he is in a critical condition and is on life support.

The hospital’s statement reads: "There has been a setback in the health of Thiru SP Balasubrahmanyam who had been admitted at MGM healthcare for symptoms of COVID since 5th August 2020. In a late night development on August 13, 2020 his condition has deteriorated. And based on the advice of the expert medical team attending to him, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and he is on life support and his condition remains critical. He is currently under observation by the team and experts from critical care and his haemodynamic and clinical parameters are being closely monitored.”

A week after he was admitted to Chennai's MGM Healthcare for his coronavirus diagnosis, singer SP Balasubrahmanyam was responding to treatment and was stable. However, his health has suddenly deteriorated.

The veteran singer was advised to home quarantine, but he got admitted at a hospital in Chennai.

On 5 August, the musician confirmed testing positive for COVID-19 with 'mild' symptoms through a video message posted on his official Facebook page.

The 74-year-old had posted a video on his official Facebook page, stating that he had chest congestion for a few days, along with cold and fever. He was tested for the novel coronavirus and found positive. He chose to stay in the hospital for a quick recovery and also to keep his family safe.

"I am in good hands. And I have good health. Nobody has to worry about this. Please don't bother to call me to find out how I am. I'm perfectly alright excepting cold and fever. Even the fever has subsided. In two days, I will be discharged and I will be home. Thanks for the concern. Lots of people are calling me. I could not attend so many calls..."

SPB is one of the most popular playback singers having lent his voice to songs in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films. He is also a Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee.
