Niambi Cacchioli believes in the power of natural products. Growing up in Kentucky, the Georgia emigrant was surrounded by farmland, which inspired her love for the Earth’s bounties.

“I grew up in an environment where Black folk were actually Greek folk. We all knew how to garden,” Cacchioli told In The Know. “It was just part of our family and neighborhood culture.”

After going to grad school in London, Cacchioli spent some time traveling the world with UNESCO. Whenever and wherever she traveled, she would hit up the local markets — and these trips made her realize that she wasn’t the only one out there making her own natural skincare due to a gap in the market.

“What I found is that regardless of the country that I was in … there were always people who look like me selling products that really reminded me of what I was doing in my own apartment back in Paris.”

Cacchioli’s excursions galvanized her into creating her own skincare company called Pholk Beauty. As an African diaspora historian, she approached the business and the products she was making with African diaspora folk remedy traditions in mind and combined that with her passion for and knowledge of natural ingredients.

Cacchioli’s grandmother was also a huge inspiration for her skincare company. She took care of her skin with natural, easily sourced products like witch hazel, rose, mint, lemon bomb and honeysuckle.

“I really, honestly thought [growing up] that that was how all Black folk took care of their skin,” Cacchioli said. “I really wanted to be that door that I open to welcome women of color into the natural beauty space.”

Pholk Beauty sources all of its ingredients from “small cultivators” and creates its products with sensitive skin in mind. Check out the video above to learn more about Pholk and its founder, and make sure to head to the company’s website to peruse some of the beauty brand’s products!
