I found similar styles starting at just $34.
Denim is a timeless, year-round staple, but for some reason, it’s felt even more ‘in’ than usual this year. Where before we often stuck to the usual suspects — shorts in summer and long jeans fall through spring — 2023 has been all about denim done differently. In April, Dua Lipa introduced me to the sexiest version of the Canadian tuxedo when she wore a floor-length denim dress with a sky-high slit while Gisele Bündchen made the case for a denim jacket as a dress. But one style has dominated this past year — worn by everyone from Selena Gomez to Gabrielle Union — and Sofía Vergara just convinced me to finally get it.
With one selfie, the actress was able to change my tune on long denim skirts. Her all-denim look featured a classic, dark-wash button-down that perfectly matched her A-line midi skirt. It felt modern while still being modest, and elevated despite the casual nature of the material. And given that fall — and its cooler temps — are officially here, it’s nice to have a chicer alternative to a typical pair of jeans (while Vergara opted for pumps, I plan to rock mine with black knee-high boots). And I found a few that fit the bill.
SweatyRocks Split-Front Maxi Skirt
If you want to try the look for less, consider SweatyRocks’ split-front maxi skirt, which you can grab for $47 at Amazon. This pick is available in 15 different denim washes, which is perfect if you’re looking to pair it with a denim top or jacket that’s already in your wardrobe à la Vergara. And, according to shoppers, it is “a must for your closet this fall.” “[It] pairs nicely with flats, high-heel boots, a belt, a simple necklace, and shirt…[while] the slit in the front makes it easy to sit at a desk or table,” wrote that same person, adding that the denim is “buttery” soft. Per an “obsessed” customer, this skirt “is so flattering,” while another person raved about the high-quality material and “perfect” fit.
Madewell Denim Mid-Rise Maxi Skirt
As a Madewell obsessee, I had admittedly already been eyeing its denim skirt, and now that it’s on sale for just $80 I might finally pull the trigger. This 100-percent cotton style features a high slit at the front, belt loops at the waist, and a deep indigo wash that’s ideal for fall and winter. One shopper even deemed it “the skirt you need for fall,” writing that “it pairs perfectly” with wardrobe basics, including simple tees and blouses, while the “slit really adds character” and a modern touch. Another customer who described the fit as “perfect” and the denim as “comfortable [and] high quality,” agreed about it being a fall must-have, writing that they planned to wear theirs with “a chunky sweater and boots” once it got cooler.
Pistola Alice Denim Maxi Skirt
At Nordstrom, Pistola’s Alice Denim skirt is a favorite among shoppers. This one is also 100-percent cotton (meaning you won’t find a ton of stretch, but you will get years of wear) and features a vintage-inspired raw hem. Per customers, this is a “must-have for your closet.” “I cannot rave enough about how much I love this skirt. It fits like a dream…and hits at the perfect length,” wrote one fan who called the “dynamic” skirt a “10/10.” “It’s super flattering especially with a belt and a slouchy top,” said another customer who plans to pair the “versatile” piece with boots and sweater throughout fall and winter.
Wearing the same pair of jeans day after day can get a bit monotonous — if you’re ready for something new but just as practical this fall, consider the skirt celebrities can’t stop wearing. Shop more denim midi and maxi skirts below:
