Sony wows with 4K HDR smartphone and interactive projector at Mobile World Congress

Sony is showing off two particularly striking new devices on its stand at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, which closes March 2.

As well as its "Motion Eye" camera for capturing incredible slow-motion footage at up to 960 frames per second, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone has a spectacular 5.5-inch display boasting both 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) and HDR (High Dynamic Range) capabilities, promising deeper blacks, whiter whites and greater depth to onscreen images.

With the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, users will be able to enjoy 4K content from platforms like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix directly on their smartphone screen. The handset also comes with the latest-gen Snapdragon 835 processor, a Hi-Res audio system, 4GB of RAM and a 64GB internal memory (expandable). The device runs Google's Android 7.0 mobile operating system with a custom interface.

Sony also presented two mid-range smartphones -- the 5-inch Xperia XA1 and 6-inch XA1 Ultra -- loaded with the 23Mpx camera previously seen in the Z5. All these new models are due on sale in spring 2017, with pricing yet to be announced.

Smartphones aren't the only attraction on the Japanese manufacturer's MWC stand, where the Xperia Touch is also drawing crowds. This interactive projector turns any flat surface into a touchscreen. It's due out in Europe this spring priced €1,499 (US pricing not yet released).
