Sony Xperia M brings a dash of colour and dual-SIM capabilities to a friendly price point

Sony has introduced a new phone to its Xperia Android smartphone line-up, and this one sports mid-range thrills for the more budget conscious who like a spot of colour in their lives.

The Sony Xperia M has a 4-inch 854 x 480 TFT display, comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean from the box, features a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8227 processor, and comes in black, white or the fetching purple or yellow colour schemes.

On the rear there's a 5-megapixel camera with flash and a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) videocam on the front. And it's a dinky little thing, being just 124 x 62 x 9.3mm and 115g.

Although its screen resolution is less than HD, the camera's video recording ability is not. Footage can be shot at 720p and then sent to a compatible display.

Sony quotes an impressive battery life of up to 10 hours 18 minutes of talktime, with up to 552 hours standby time. Music listening time is claimed to be 39 hours 24 minutes, while video playback is claimed to be up to nine hours and 42 minutes.

NFC connectivity is on board, but Sony is yet to reveal how much storage space the Xperia M will ship with, or whether it will allow for expansion by microSD card. It has revealed, however, that a dual-SIM version of the phone will be available also, allowing you to split business and personal mobile numbers on the same handset.

Both editions of the Sony Xperia M will be available worldwide from Q3. Price is yet to be announced, but we'd expect it to be very reasonable if not free on affordable tariffs.
