Sorsogon Representative Salvador "Sonny" Escudero III passed away early Monday morning after battling cancer for two years.
The 69-year-old legislator, who is also the father of Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero, died in his sleep in his Quezon City home before dawn on Monday, House Secretary-General Marilyn Barua-Yap confirmed via text message.
The solon has been diagnosed with cancer of the ilium (uppermost part and largest bone of the pelvis).
In a statement, the House of Representatives, which has flown its flag on half-mast Monday, said it "mourns the passing of veteran legislator."
Escudero was on his second term as representative of the first district of Sorsogon and headed the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture.
"His brilliance and vast experience as a legislator and his commitment and dedication to duty--presiding over committee hearings and actively participating during plenary sessions even on a wheelchair--is a perfect role model for public officers that should be etched in the annals of Philippine public service," the House said in a statement.
Prior to serving in the 14th and 15th Congress, Escudero has also represented the first district of Sorsogon in the 8th, 9th and 10th Congress.
He has also served as the Agriculture secretary during the administrations of Ferdinand Marcos and Fidel Ramos.
Escudero was also a member of the defunct interim Batasang Pambansa.
Escudero's remains will be brought to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in New Manila, Quezon City Monday afternoon, Barua-Yap said.
She added that a necrological service has been scheduled at the House of Representatives on Wednesday after a 9 a.m. requiem mass.
