After Cambodia’s ATEC Biodigesters, Singapore’s nFrnds and Indonesia’s Kecipir grabbed the runner-up prizes

ATEC Biodigesters, a Cambodian company that lets people mix organic waste with water to create fuel for homes and fertilizer for crops, has won the top prize at Sankalp Southeast Asia Awards at Sankalp Southeast Asia Summit 2016 in Jakarta.

The Biodigester itself is fairly large, but the company claims the product can save Cambodians US$780 over a three-year period while also providing a sustainable alternative for energy needs.

The second-place team was a Singaporean company named nFrnds. The startup is a digital cloud-based company that is trying to help the world’s unconnected access the internet.

The final award winner was Kecipir is an Indonesian company focussing on the production cycle of vegtables to bring the price of organic food down so they compete with ‘ordinary vegtables’ in price and supply.

The Sanklap Awards started in 2009 with a mission of highlighting SME entrepreneurship in the social enterprise sector.

There were ten finalists at the pitching competition and the seven other finalists were as follows:

  • EngageSpark: A Philippines company that allows people to build SMS alert campaigns targeting those without smartphones.

  • Virtualahan: A Philippines company that trains differently-abled people to do jobs and then works as with companies to get them hired.

  • Hilltribe Organics: A Thai company that wants to help poor hill communities in the country improve their economic situation through learning organic and sustainable farming methods — specifically in egg harvesting.

  • My Dream Home: A Cambodian company that uses easy-to-construct bricks to make homes more affordable with the goal of bringing shelter to every person in the country.

  • Watershed Ventures: This Cambodian company is a water, hygiene and sanitation development company working to improve the infrastructure in the country.

  • HappyTap: HappyTap actually operates under the Watershed Ventures umbrella but does so in Vietnam, building a mass-produced handwashing station in the country.

  • NRG Solutions: A solar energy company in Cambodia, it is helping bring reliable and affordable energy to everyone in the country.

Over the years, The event has showcased about 150 companies and helped facilitate around US$120 million of follow-up investment for the companies.
