KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno supporters need not attend a planned debate between former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed and himself, Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz said today.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, Nazri said that he alone could handle the debate, which is set to take place at his constituency in Padang Rengas.

“I want to ask Umno and BN supporters, there is no need to come,” Nazri said.

He also said that it is even better if no Umno representatives were at the debate.

Nazri also said that there is no need to arrange for a live telecast of the debate, as the debate was between two individuals.

"He doesn't have a position. He is not an Opposition leader. I am also not a head of the government," he said.

"He challenged me as an individual. He is not representing the Opposition leader or Pakatan Harapan. So there is no status to use a live telecast," he added.

The debate is set to take place this Saturday 3pm at the Kuala Kangsar Mara Junior College in Perak.
