Stephens out of US Open, Puig takes seeded spot
America's world number 25 Sloane Stephens withdrew from the US Open on Friday with a right foot injury, organisers said. The 23-year-old's withdrawal sees Olympic champion Monica Puig of Puerto Rico move into the 32nd seed position. Stephens, who made the fourth round in New York in 2013, had been on a poor run of form in recent weeks. Since exiting Wimbledon in the third round, Stephens lost three consecutive first rounds at Washington, Montreal and the Rio Olympics.
