Iloilo City, Iloilo-The Iloilo Provincial Health Office is worried that a new strain of dengue fever may cause an outbreak again.
"We know that a new strain emerges every three years," said Dr. Patricia Grace Trabado, chief provincial health officer.
The Serotype 4 dengue strain was prevalent in 2010 -- the same year that an outbreak was declared in Iloilo.
That year, approximately 6,500 dengue cases and 32 deaths were recorded in 42 towns and one component city.
Trabado pointed out the possibility of an increase in dengue cases this year, especially with the onslaught of the rainy season.
A total of 1,489 dengue cases have been recorded including 10 deaths between January 1 and June 15, 2013.
Trabado strongly urged the citizenry to be responsible in cleaning their surroundings that will prevent the creation of breeding grounds for mosquitoes that are dengue-carriers.
Meanwhile, the Iloilo City government is also strongly reminding residents to strengthen their anti-dengue measures.
The Iloilo City Health Office has recorded 383 dengue cases and six deaths between January 1 and June 8, 2013.
