13 new movies, series to watch in Canada this August: Netflix, Disney+ and more

Summer is still in full force, and throughout the month of August there are plenty of hot new movies and shows to obsess over.
Canadian stars shine bright this month as Netflix's popular series "Never Have I Ever" (starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) returns for season three, while Tatiana Maslany takes on the role of She-Hulk on the new Disney+ series.
Another highly anticipated series hitting screens is the "Games of Thrones" prequel "House of Dragons," which delves back into the world of Westeros 300 years in the past.
Oscar-nominated "Belfast" will also be streaming on Crave; the film was nominated for best supporting actor (Ciarán Hinds), supporting actress (Judi Dench), director (Kenneth Branagh) and original screenplay.

Lightyear

Thirteen Lives
Directed by Ron Howard, "Thirteen Lives" recounts the true story of the tremendous global effort to rescue a Thai soccer team who become trapped in the Tham Luang cave during an unexpected rainstorm. A team of the world’s most skilled and experienced divers join with Thai forces and more than 10,000 volunteers to attempt a harrowing rescue of the twelve boys and their coach. Prey
Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, “Prey” is the story of Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. Streams August 5 on Disney+.
Secret Headquarters
Young Charlie Kincaid discovers a secret headquarters under his home, that seems to belong to a superhero. When he shares his find with his friends, they start to believe that his estranged father (Owen Wilson) might have a secret double life. Streams August 5 on Paramount+.

Indian Matchmaking: Season 2
Sima Taparia, everyone's favourite Indian matchmaker, returns for another season of helping eligible, eccentric and eager clients find their future spouses. Streams August 10 on Netflix.
Locke & Key: Season 3
In the thrilling final chapter of the series, the Locke family uncovers more magic as they face a demonic new foe who's dead-set on possessing the keys. Streams August 10 on Netflix.
Belfast
This semi-autobiographical film chronicles the life of a working class family and their young son Buddy as he navigates his childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in Northern Ireland. It's based partly on actor/director Kenneth Branagh's childhood. Streams August 12 on Crave.
Day Shift
Jamie Foxx stars as a hard working blue collar dad looking to provide a good life for his family. However, his mundane pool cleaning job is simply a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires. Streams August 12 on Netflix.
Never Have I Ever: Season 3
Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her friends may finally be single no more, but they're about to learn that high school relationships come with a lot of self-discovery — and plenty of drama. Streams August 12 on Netflix.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is an attorney specializing in superhuman-oriented legal cases. In this nine-part series, she must navigate the complicated life of a single, 30-something who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch super-powered Hulk. Streams weekly, beginning August 17 on Disney+.
Making The Cut: Season 3
Hosted and executive produced by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, this fast-paced design competition once again aims to find the next great talent in fashion. Streams August 19 on Prime Video.
House of the Dragon
The highly anticipated "Game of Thrones" prequel series follows the story of the civil war that rocked House Targaryen — 300 years before the events portrayed in "Game of Thrones." Streams August 21 on Crave.
Week of August 22
Me Time
When a stay-at-home dad finds himself with some “me time” for the first time in years, he reconnects with his former best friend for a wild weekend that nearly upends his life. The film stars Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg. Streams August 26 on Netflix.
