Strictly Come Dancing announces new category.

Strictly Come Dancing has announced a brand new dance category for its upcoming series. Introducing the ‘Couple’s Choice,’ this category will allow couples to choose to dance from one of three categories: contemporary, street/commercial and theatre/jazz.

This is the first time a new category has been introduced on Strictly in almost ten years. This was when Charleston was introduced back in 2009.

An official Strictly spokesperson confirmed: “This series of Strictly we are introducing a brand-new dance category, Couples Choice.

“This will give our celebrities and professional dancers an even greater opportunity to showcase their skills and for the show to celebrate even more styles of dance.”

There will also likely be another big shake-up on this year’s series, as reports are suggesting that there will be several same-sex dance routines featured for the first time.

A source revealed to The Sun: “Some of the dancers have been rehearsing some same sex pairings with plans to introduce them to a few of the professional numbers.

“There have been a lot of calls for same sex pro and celebrity pairings on the show so this is an ideal way to integrate into the format.”

The launch episode of Strictly Come Dancing series 16 starts this Saturday on BBC One.
