Strictly's Craig Revel Horwood announces new musical project

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has signed up to choreograph and direct the upcoming NOW That's What I Call A Musical.

Written by comedian Pippa Evans, the show is pencilled in for a September 2024 world premiere at Aylesbury's Waterside Theatre ahead of hitting the road around the UK and Ireland.

The description for this nostalgic extravaganza, which features tunes from Blondie, Wham!, Spandau Ballet and Whitney Houston, teased: "Get ready to relive the playlist of your life by celebrating 40 years of the iconic and chart-topping compilations brand NOW That's What I Call Music, which has sold an estimated 200 million copies worldwide".

As far as the storyline goes, we're in Birmingham in the late 1980s.

School pals Gemma and April are busy with some business of major importance – planning their lives based on Number One Magazine quizzes and dreaming of snogging Rick Astley.

Fastforward to 2009 and they're attending their dreaded high school reunion.

"Drama, old flames and receding hairlines come together as friends reunite and everything from the past starts to slot into place. The biggest question is: what was with all that hairspray?"

In a statement, Horwood himself commented: "This is a beautiful and funny story about two schoolgirls navigating life through their shared love of music.

"Pippa has written a script that takes you right back to sharing your Walkman headphones with your best friend, escaping the boring day-to-day and dancing like nobody is watching. Our show is packed full of the biggest hits of the era and I cannot wait to get started and you will love it."

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays and Sundays on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Tickets for Strictly's 2024 live arena tour are available now.
