Strictly Come Dancing star Krishnan Guru-Murthy has revealed his professional partner Lauren Oakley motivated him in surprising fashion before Sunday’s dance-off.

The pair became the latest couple to exit the series, with the duo losing out to Angela Rippon and Kai Widdrington in the eliminator.

Krishnan and Lauren appeared opposite Fleur East on It Takes Two to discuss their exit, with the newsreader revealing that Lauren suggested an amusing technique in preparation for the dance-off.

“By the time you get to the red light, you have a lot to think about,” he began. “All your tension and adrenaline has already gone because you’ve already danced, so you have to wind yourself back up and get ready to dance.

“Lauren was going ‘focus, focus, focus’ – she actually offered to slap me around the face at one point,” he disclosed, with the professional remarking: “He said he needed to wake up, so I said, ‘Do you want me to smack you?’ I’ll do anything.”

Following on from the hilarious revelation, the pair spoke about their final dance, which saw them at the bottom of the leaderboard after scoring 25 points for the Samba.

“Once we had scored so low on the dance, I was expecting to leave. It sends such a signal when you’re so far down the leaderboard – you’re telling the viewers ‘he’s out of his depth.’ [My final dance] wasn’t just about performance – I wanted to remember and enjoy it.”

“I couldn’t have asked for a better dance partner,” added Lauren. “He was a blank canvas, it was so nice to learn how he learned, figure out the best for him and create routines around him – we had some really good tunes in there as well.”

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays and Sundays on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
